Recently the most asked questions by veterans to the Veterans National Recovery Center is about possible grants for emergency home repairs. It’s a tough nut for older and working poor veterans who are already strapped and then a home disaster happens. And it’s not an easy item to find grants for.
In Iowa, there is the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund. It offers a once in a lifetime grant of up to $10,000 for emergency home repairs. Here is a link: https://va.iowa.gov/iowa-veterans-trust-fund
Scroll down through it and you will see that home repairs are included. If you live in Iowa, I suggest you put in your application immediately. There is a waiting list, and even though the fund has just been increased to $800,000 per year, that is often used up within the first month or two of the fiscal year.
If you do not live in Iowa, I suggest you contact your state Department of Veterans Affairs or Habitat for Humanity for starters to see what they might have to offer. In addition, some churches will have special charity funds, or even construction volunteers. For hardship cases, they may take sympathy on you and put together a crew or money to do the job. Also, various neighborhood veterans organizations like American Legion, VFW, AmVets and the like can be helpful.
This is an area where we need to work to give better information on what is out there. If you know of other sources of funding for emergency home repairs for veterans, please contact me at bob.krause@vnrc.us. I will be happy to incorporate your findings into this Helpful Hint!!
